Marco Imperiale

Founder and managing director of Better Ipsum, a consultancy focused on legal design, -innovation, and -wellbeing.. Marco Imperiale has a long-time experience working on legal design services and products for relevant institutions, Fortune 500 and listed companies. A true legal design pioneer, Marco wrote (with Barbara de Muro) the first Italian book on legal design and lectured the course on legal design at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. At Harvard, where he graduated as Fulbright Scholar, he also worked as visiting researcher. Fun facts. Marco has seen more than 1000 concerts, run a few marathons, and completed nine times El Camino de Santiago. Whenever he finds time in his hectic agenda, he also works as negotiation consultant and mindfulness trainer.

Stefania Passera

Founder of Passera Design, Contract designer. Stefania Passera is an Italian-born information designer based in Helsinki, Finland. With almost 15 years of experience in simplifying contracts and other legal documents, she is considered a true legal design pioneer. She is the founder of Passera Design and collaborates as Contract Designer in Residence with World Commerce & Contracting.

Stefania is an all-rounder, backing her design expertise with a solid academic background. She has served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Vaasa and earned her PhD from Aalto University. Her research has been widely published, and she is an in-demand keynote speaker and lecturer on contract design, simplification, and legal design. As a legal design advocate and popularizer, she has co-authored the Legal Design Manifesto, built the open-access Contract Design Pattern Library, and organized 30+ Legal Design Jam workshops around the world.

Her innovative work has earned her the European Women of Legal Tech Award in 2020 and a World Commerce & Contracting Fellowship in 2017.

Mel Flanagan is a global social justice, environmental, open government advocate, and designer, with a background in theatre and filmmaking. Nook Studios is a social enterprise of researchers, artists, designers, and civic technologists based in Sydney, Australia.

Nook design revolutionary content and information products to help people simply explain, connect, and visualise complex information such as legislation and regulations - making them easier to follow, analyse, and improve. Nook's experience includes natural resource governance, (mining, oil, gas), infrastructure projects, environmental approvals, government decision making processes, contracting and procurement pathways.

Mel regularly speaks about the role of design in making positive social and environment impact and open initiatives such as open contracting. Nook run workshops to share their approach and are producing open-source digital tools to help everyone communicate more effectively and bring processes and data to life in engaging ways for community audiences.

Erika Pagano

Head of Legal Innovation and Design, Simmons & Simmons. Erika Pagano is an award-winning lawyer, innovator, and educator whose sweet spots include culture creation, leadership, strategy, teaming, technology, and cross-border initiatives. Having dedicated a decade to change, creativity, and client centricity in the legal profession, Erika works with a wide variety of clients on harnessing the power of legal design.

Erika was recognized by LawTechUK, a Ministry of Justice-backed initiative, as a legal tech trailblazer. She was named Rising Star of the Year (the Lynne Freeman Award) by WeAreTheCity in 2021, as well as “highly commended” for Rising Star of the Year at the 2019 British Legal Awards. She is a regular speaker and published author. She also serves as Guest Faculty at IE University (Madrid), where she teaches undergraduate and masters courses on innovation in the legal profession. She sits on multiple boards (Georgetown Class of 2008 Committee, LawWithoutWalls Advisory Board, University of Miami School of Law Alumni Board and National Advisory Council, and others) and is a member of Simmons’ gender balance and neurodiversity committees.

Glen Byrne

Legal Designer, Simmons & Simmons. Glen Byrne qualified as a lawyer in Ireland before joining Simmons Wavelength as a legal designer. Drawing on experiences working in design and communications, Glen creates a better experience of law for its users. As part of training as a solicitor, Glen worked in employment law, European competition law, debt and enforcement, and eventually qualifying into international tax law. Glen also worked in communications and in graphic design, which has given him a perspective unique in the legal industry and skills that are pertinent to successful legal design.

Glen has worked on large legal design projects as part of Simmons & Simmons, such as recreating the data privacy manual for a large, multinational energy business, and redesigning the code of conduct for a global financial institution. Glen has also taught legal design principles at Oxford University and Swansea University.

AK Legal Design, Co-author of "The Legal Design Book". Astrid Kohlmeier is a lawyer and designer and internationally considered as a pioneer of legal design. She runs the Munich-based consulting firm AK LEGAL DESIGN. Co-author of ‘The Legal Design Book’, Astrid particularly advises legal departments and law firms on the development of user-centered solutions with a strong focus on legal innovation and digital transformation. She is a member and lecturer of the Executive Faculty at the Bucerius Center on the Legal Profession, co-founder of the non-profit association Liquid Legal Institute, speaker at relevant conferences worldwide and works with a global network of legal designers. Founder of Legal.D, the first legal design agency in the MENA region. Dorra Harrar is a humanist business lawyer and the first expert practitioner, a pioneer of legal design, in the MENA region. She is a founder of Legal.D, the first legal design agency in the MENA region, based in Tunisia.

Dorra combines her advanced experience as a business lawyer with her creative, innovative and humanistic spirit to help companies and individuals make their legal documents clear, understandable, and efficient, to enable change into a strategic drive for business and insure human dignity.

Dorra has worked on several legal design projects in social and business fields, both nationally and internationally, and has succeeded in using legal design in a litigation case for the first time before a Tunisian court.

In 2022, Dorra won the WorldCC Innovation & Excellence award in the personal initiative category. The award recognized Dorra’s significant impact in business and its unique contribution to challenging the status quo of the practice of law in her country.
She also organized, in Tunisia, the first legal design workshop for law students and has been invited to speak at national and international events.

General Counsel, Legal Designer. Laura Hartmann is a General Counsel and Legal Designer based in regional Victoria, Australia. She is passionate about creating in-house legal services that people love. Laura uses design methodologies to re-examine everything we think we know about in-house legal teams- from the way we write and speak, to the processes that underpin service delivery. She is currently building a legal service from the ground up at Grampians Health and loving every minute of it. Laura holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Public and International Law from the University of Melbourne. Riikka Koulu

Associate Professor at University of Helsinki and leader of Helsinki Legal Tech Lab. Prof. Dr. Riikka Koulu is the Associate Professor (Social and Legal Implications of AI) at the Faculties of Social Sciences and Law, University of Helsinki, Finland. Since 2016, she also leads the University of Helsinki Legal Tech Lab, an interdisciplinary research hub that examines the intersections of law, technology, and society. She holds several positions inside and outside of academia, e.g. the chairperson of the Finnish Data Protection Ombudsman’s Expert Board; member of the Ethical Advisory Board of the Finnish Centre for Artificial Intelligence (FCAI); and associated researcher at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society HIIG (Berlin). Her current research interests include automation of legal practices, AI ethics, policy and regulation, and procedural perspectives to technological design.

Natalie Byrom

Honorary Senior Research Fellow at UCL Laws. Dr Natalie Byrom is Honorary Senior Research Fellow at UCL Laws. Her research focuses on evaluating the impact of data driven technologies on access to justice and mechanisms for increasing public participation in justice data governance. Between 2018 and 2020 she was expert advisor to the UK Ministry of Justice where she led the development of a data strategy to underpin their £1bn programme of digital court reform. She sits on the Civil Justice Council and the Ministry of Justice Senior Data Governance Panel, which advises the Lord Chancellor and Lord Chief Justice on novel and contentious uses of justice data. She is part of the BBC Expert Women network and her research has been published in the legal and national press.
